Die Lebenschancen der Menschen sind zunehmend abhängig von ihren Wohnorten, heißt es in einer Studie der Bertelsmann-Stiftung. Der Blick auf die Städte und Gemeinden offenbart teils drastische Unterschiede.

Demokratie und Sozialstaat gehören zusammen. Die Bürger in einer Demokratie brauchen Ausbildung und Auskommen, sie brauchen eine leidlich gesicherte Existenz. Das Leben wird weiterhin ungerecht beginnen und es wird ungerecht enden. Dass es dazwischen einigermaßen gerecht zugeht – dafür gibt es den Sozialstaat.“
